Basic Overview

A GPS tracking device uses the Global Positioning System to determine the precise location of a vehicle, person, or other asset to which it is attached. It records the position of the asset at regular intervals. The recorded location data is transmitted to a central location data base, or internet-connected computer, using a SIM card (GPRS or SMS) or satellite modem. This allows the asset's location to be displayed on a map or when analysing the track later using GPS tracking software.

System Overview for GPS Telematic System

A simple GPS Telematic system contains several components:

  1. GPS: Global Positioning Satellite System
  2. GPS Tracking Device with GPS receiver (antenna) and SIM card utilizing GPRS (or satellite modems).
  3. GSM network operator: the GPS tracking device sends the tracking information via GPRS to the software. If there is no GPRS connection, the tracking device will store the information until it can send the data.
  4. GPS Fleet Software: The GPS Fleet Software receives the tracking information and displays it on maps, in graphs or reports. It also sends automatic alarms in case of events. Automatic scheduled reports are sent to the users. The GPS Fleet Software is setup as a web-based service or securely inside a company
  5. Software users connect to the GPS Fleet Software using their internet browsers to locate the current position of vehicles and get information and reports about past trips.
Types of tracking devices Application
Vehicle Tracking

Installed inside a vehicle and connected to the vehicle main power and additional signals such as ignition. It is used to track the vehicle position and to generate reports such as automated vehicle logbooks.

Personal Tracking

Used to track the movement of people. Normal applications range from security, to track workers in dangerous situations or tracking children or patience

Asset Tracking Tracking of mobile assets, machinery or containers. Most tracking devices contain internal batteries and internal antennas and are embedded in rugged boxes.

User Requirements

Applying GPS Tracking Systems is an innovative technology. When you consider the following requirements, nothing can go wrong:

  • - Getting professional help to choose the right tracking device for your needs
  • - Usage of the right SIM cards with data packages to make the data transfer work
  • - Experienced people should install the tracking devices

Release Note GPS Fleet Software 3.8.8

We are happy to announce our latest software release for the GPS Fleet Software. It contains additional features for our customers:

Show Geofence Areas in the Map (Current Overview)

The GPS Fleet Software will show the geofence borders as a blue rectangle in the map. It will display only the geofences to the selected vehicles that are shown on the map and that are close to the vehicle.

Send Navigation Targets to the Vehicle

You can use the GPS Fleet Software to send navigation targets to the vehicle. This requires to install the GFSxNavi navigation device in the vehicle together with an upgraded version of the GFSx44 tracking device. You can send geofences as new targets to the device.

SMS Alerts

Besides email alerts users can now configure to get SMS alerts. SMS alerts can be configured for almost each type of alert in the asset configuration.

Additional Asset Configurations

The asset configuration can now also set a absolute speed limit per vehicle that works per each asset independent from the road level.

Advanced Reporting Filters

You can set special reporting filters to analyze your reports faster. Besides the start and end time for the report you can select time patterns (e.g. only Mondays, only after work, only between 9 am - 6 pm), so that the report only shows the data within the time patterns or outside the time patterns.

Improved Asset Maintenance Report

The asset configuration shows additional service information for the next service. You can define that the next service shall be based on kilometer distance, date or operation hours. What's more, you can add a comment text.

The data that you enter per vehicle are shown in the asset report. The asset report can be now used to search for the next vehicles that must go to maintenance or service.

Global Positioning System PDF Print E-mail

History of the Global Positioning System

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based global navigation satellite system (GNSS) that provides reliable location and time information at all times and anywhere on or near the Earth when and where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites. It is maintained by the United States government and is freely accessible by anyone with a GPS receiver. In addition to GPS other systems are in use or under development.

GPS_Satellite_NASA

GPS satellites broadcast signals from space, and each GPS receiver uses these signals to calculate its three-dimensional location (latitude, longitude, and altitude) and the current time. The system is composed of 24 to 32 satellites in medium Earth orbit. The users are composed of military users of the secure GPS Precise Positioning Service and tens of millions of civil, commercial, and scientific users of the Standard Positioning Service.

CANBUS Fleet Management Systems Interface (FMS) PDF Print E-mail

How can you get more details from your vehicles?

The Fleet Management Systems Interface (FMS) is a standard interface to vehicle data of commercial vehicles. The six European manufacturers Daimler AG, MAN AG, Scania, Volvo (incl. Renault), DAF Trucks and IVECO have developed the so called FMS-Standard in 2002 to make manufacturer independent applications for telematics possible.

Among others the following data are broadcast at the FMS interface and can be communicated with our tracking device:

- Vehicle speed
- Total fuel used (litre since life time)
- Fuel level (0–100 %)
- Engine speed
- Total engine hours (h)
- Service distance
- Engine coolant temperature
